What is a Conveyor Belt? Working Principles, Types & Applications

A conveyor belt is an endless loop of flexible material used to transport bulk products, raw materials, or packaged goods continuously and efficiently from one location to another. As the backbone of modern industrial logistics, conveyor belt systems play a vital role across mining, cement manufacturing, quarry aggregate processing, energy generation, recycling facilities, and port operations.

How Does an Industrial Conveyor System Work?

A standard conveyor system consists of several core mechanical components: drive pulleys (drums), tail/take-up pulleys, carrying idler rollers, return rollers, and the conveyor belt carcass. The drive pulley is powered by an electric motor with a reduction gearbox, transmitting rotational torque via friction to move the belt surface continuously.

Bulk materials loaded at the feed chute travel over the troughed idler rollers to reach the discharge point. The belt then loops underneath via return rollers to maintain a closed continuous cycle.

Main Types of Industrial Conveyor Belts

Depending on the operating conditions, material abrasiveness, temperature, and elevation angle, different types of belts are utilized:

1. Rubber Conveyor Belts (EP Series)

The most widely deployed heavy-duty belt in quarries and mining. Constructed with multiple synthetic polyester-polyamide (EP) fabric plies encased in high-grade vulcanized rubber covers. They deliver exceptional abrasion resistance (DIN X, Y, W standards) and withstand high tensile operating loads.

2. Chevron (Cleated) Conveyor Belts

Engineered with integrally vulcanized V-pattern cleats on the top cover to prevent material rollback on steep incline conveyors between 15° and 40°. Essential for damp sand, gravel, coal, and aggregate loading.

3. Heat Resistant Conveyor Belts (HR Series)

Designed with specialized EPDM and SBR compounds to convey scorching materials like cement clinker, sinter, hot ash, and foundry castings at continuous temperatures up to 200°C.

4. PVC & PU Synthetic Belts

Lightweight belts ideal for clean, smooth transport in packaging, distribution centers, pharmaceuticals, and food handling.

5. Conveyor Components & Accessories

High-performance primary and secondary belt scrapers, impact beds, ceramic drum lagging, and conveyor rollers to extend belt service life and minimize unscheduled downtime.

Key Factors When Choosing a Conveyor Belt

  • Material Characteristics: Grain size, sharpness, moisture, temperature, and chemical composition (oil/grease presence).
  • Belt Width & Speed: Matching operational capacity (tons per hour - t/h) with motor horsepower.
  • Tensile Rating (EP Rating): Choosing the right carcass strength (e.g., EP 400/3, EP 630/4, EP 800/4) based on conveyor length and slope.
  • Cover Rubber Thickness: Top and bottom cover ratios (e.g., 4+2 mm, 5+2 mm, 6+2 mm) for maximum wear life.
